Amid protests against the new citizenship law passed by the Indian government, historian Ramchandra Guha was detained by the police in Bangalore on Thursday.
Guha was among several other protesters who were detained by the police while they were demonstrating in the city against the law.
"I have been detained by police for holding a poster of Gandhi and speaking about the constitution to the press," Ramchandra Guha told NDTV.
"The police are working under directions from central government. We are protesting non-violently against a discriminatory act, in a disciplined way. Look here, everyone is protesting peacefully. Have you seen any violence?," he said.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC was clamped in Karnataka as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order as various political parties and organisation planned to stage dharna, demonstration and protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Meanwhile, protests against the citizenship bill passed by the Indian government last week hit several parts of the country, including national capital New Delhi, on Thursday.
