RJD calls bandh in Bihar as protest against CAA today
Patna/IBNS: Protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which has kept the country on boil for over a week now, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) called for a bandh in Bihar on Saturday.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Friday termed the new Act as "unconstitutional".
He also said the Act has exposed the "divisive character" of the BJP.
"The bandh has been called to save the country and Constitution," Tejashwi said and added giving a warning to the state government, "We will peacefully protest. If Nitish Kumar (Bihar Chief Minister) plays trick and beat us, the consequences will be different."
The Act, if implemented, will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Parsi, Jain and Buddhist but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.
Interestingly, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday joined his counterparts of other states to reject the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Odisha have already stated they will not implement both the CAA and NRC.
