Ranchi/UNI: Senior Congress leader Rajendra Singh and JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed are currently leading the race for the new Speaker of the 5th Jharkhand Assembly.

Rajendra Singh had served as a cabinet minister in the previous Hemant government but had lost in the assembly elections of 2014 from his home turf Bermo. However, he made a comeback in 2019 and won from the seat by a margin of 25,172 votes defeating sitting BJP MLA Yogeshwar Mahto Batul. Rajendra Singh is also a prominent face of the party hailing from the Rajput community.

Once a Congressman Sarfaraz Ahmad switched over to the JMM after the Gandey seat fell into JMM's kitty as per the seat sharing agreement inked between the allies of Mahagathbandhan, the JMM, Congress and the RJD.

He defeated sitting BJP MLA from Gandey seat Jaiprakash Verma by a margin of 8,855 votes to come back into the house.

A prominent face of the minority community Ahmed had also served as the president of state Congress at the time of unified Bihar and also represented Giridih in the 8th Lok Sabha. A well read and experienced man he has got well wishers both in the JMM and the Congress which makes him an able choice for the hot seat.
