SC fixes March 17 for final hearing of Sonia Gandhi's plea in National Herald case

New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Monday fixed March 17 for the final hearing of appeals filed by Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi against Delhi High Court order allowing re-assessment of their income tax for 2011-12 in connection with National Herald case.

A bench comprising justices DY Chandrachud and Hrishikesh Roy said, since proceedings were pending before Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) and the apex court would like to wait till March 17.

Appearing for Income Tax department, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the apex court had last year said that irrespective of proceedings before the tribunal, this court will continue hearing the matter.

Sonia Gandhi's counsel P Chidambaram said that ITAT has delivered a verdict on the issue but has not dealt with at least six issues.

He said that his clients have moved the ITAT seeking adjudication of six other issues and the next hearing is scheduled to be held on Feb 28.
