West Bengal govt gears up to foil Jan 8 shut down

Kolkata/IBNS: The West Bengal government has decided to remain business-as-usual on Jan 8 24-hour nationwide bandh called by the Congress and the Left front against CAA, NRC and NPR.

The ruling TMC government on Monday issued an order asking all state government employees to report for duty and cancelled all leaves on Jan 8.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had led the protest marches and demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Nation Register of Citizens and going further stopped the work for National Population Register.

However, she has made clear that her government will not support shutdown even on issues she agrees with.

According to media reports, no leaves will be allowed on days preceding and succeeding the bandh day(Jan 7 and 9), besides the day of the strike.

The employees choosing to skip office on these three days will have to face "dies-no(deduction of a day from service life)" and salary cut for a day, said the reports.

The Chief Minister has said the 24-hour bandh will add to the difficulties faced by the country due to the economic slowdown.
