Kolkata/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the Sesquicetenary Celebration of Kolkata Port Trust in Kolkata, which he renamed as Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

Addressing the gathering, the PM announced that Rs. 500 crores have been given to ensure pension to the long-term employees and former employees of the same.

"For the modernization and development of this port, a lot of schemes have been inaugurated.  For the education and empowerment of tribal girls, hostels and skill development centres have also been inaugurated," the PM said.

Modi said this port has seen India earn its independence. It has seen India's journey from Satyagraha to Swacchagraha.

"This port isn't just a port for traders, it has also seen a lot of legends pass through it, he said.

Modi also announced the renaming of the port as Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

"I announce the renaming of the Kolkata Port Trust to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port. He is a living legend who was a leader for development and fought on the forefront for the idea of One Nation, One Constitution," PM Modi said.

"Dr. Mookerjee had set the stone for industrialization in India. Chittaranjan Locomotive Factory, Hindustan Aircraft Factory, Damodar Valley Corporation and several others saw active participation from him," said he.

He also used the occasion to note some of his government's agenda and projects.

"About 575 projects worth over Rs 6 lakh crore have been earmarked. Over 200 projects worth Rs 3 lakh crore are already under development and about 125 projects have already been completed," said Modi.

"Our government wants the entire transport network modern and integrated," he added.

"Our Govt is building infrastructure for aquariums, water parks, sea-museums, cruise and water sports in all cities of India that have ports. The Central Govt is also promoting cruise-oriented tourism. We're working towards increasing the number of cruises from 150 to 1000. This growth will also help West Bengal," announced the PM.

Earlier, in the day, Modi paid tributes to Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary at Kolkata's Belur Math and addressed a gathering there.
