Broadband internet to be partially restored in Jammu and Kashmir from today: State Govt
Srinagar/UNI/IBNS: The broadband internet services in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be restored in the institutions providing essential services in a phased manner starting from Wednesday, state government said in an order late on Tuesday.
The order means that institutions like hospitals, banks and government offices of the Union territory would now have the facility of broadband internet service.
The government also said that the 2G services would be restarted in the postpaid mobile connections in five districts from the January 15 onward.
The districts where 2G mobile connectivity on post-paid mobiles will resume from Wednesday include Udhampur, Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Reasi, all in the Jammu region.
Internet facility through broadband already exists in Jammu division. In Kashmir as of now 844 e-terminals have been set up to facilitate the public, especially students.
69 special counters for tourists and separate terminals for filing GST returns and application forms for various exams are currently operational.
However, restrictions on social media will continue in the state.
State government's decision comes days after the Supreme Court described internet access as a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution.
Internet and mobile phone services were withdrawn in Jammu and Kashmir after August 5, when Center scrapped Article 370 and divided the state in two union territories.
