We will not revoke CAA, let protests against citizenship law continue: Amit Shah

New Delhi/IBNS: In a clear message to several opposition political parties, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the government will not revoke the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) despite the widespread protests against the new contentious law are taking place in the country.

Addressing a pro-CAA rally in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow, Shah said, "Whoever wants to protest can continue but the CAA will not be revoked."

Once again highlighting the new law, Shah said, "The bill (which is now an Act) has no provision to take away citizenship of anyone. It will give citizenship to the minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India due to religious persecution."

Hitting out at the Congress, the Home Minister held Congress' "divisive politics" responsible for the Act.

"We brought the Act because of Congress' sin of dividing the nation on the basis of religion. The number of minorities kept on decreasing in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Where did the people go? Few people have been killed while the others have been converted," he said.

Accusing the Opposition of spreading lies over the Act, Shah attacked all prominent rival leaders saying, "Narendra Modi came with the CAA. Congress, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh (Akhilesh Yadav), Mayawati, Kejriwal (Arvind Kejriwal) are spreading lies over the bill (Act)."

"I had placed the bill in the Lok Sabha. If any opposition leader can prove that the bill takes away anyone's citizenship, I urge him to come and participate in a public debate," the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.
