Nirbhaya case: SC to hear another curative plea tomorrow
New Delhi/UNI/IBNS A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice N V Ramana, will hear a curative petition filed by Nirbhaya case death row convict, Akshay Kumar Thakur, on Thursday.
The other four judges on the bench will be Justices Arun Mishra, Rohinton Fali Nariman, R Banumati and Ashok Bhushan.
Thakur, a death row convict in the 16th December 2012, gang rape and murder case, had filed a curative petition, seeking commutation of his capital punishment to life imprisonment.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court rejected the petition filed by Mukesh Singh, one of the four convicts in 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, against President Ram Nath Kovind's mercy plea rejection.
The top court said it does not think the President didn't use his mind in rejecting the mercy plea.
Also, the Supreme Court said sufferings in prison can't be the ground for a convict's mercy.
Welcoming the verdict, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said, "I thank the Supreme Court for rejecting the plea. I have full faith in the justice system and I am sure the convicts will be hanged."
The four convicts are Akshay Kumar, Pawan Gupta, Mukesh and Vinay Kumar.
They are supposed to be executed on Feb 1.
On Dec 16, 2012, Nirbhaya, who was a 23-year female physiotherapy intern, was gang-raped, assaulted and tortured at a private bus in Delhi when she was travelling with her friend.
She was raped by six people including the driver of the bus.
The victim had succumbed to her injuries 13 days after the horrific crime was committed.
The incident had sparked national and international outrage. Both the state and central government were brought under the scanner for not providing adequate protection to women in the national capital.
