Former TMC MP Krishna Bose passes away at the age of 89

Kolkata/IBNS: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from West Bengal's prestigious Jadavpur constituency, Krishna Bose, passed away on Saturday.

She was 89.

Bose passed away at 10:20 am at a private hospital here.

The hospital issued a statement which reads, "Mrs Krishna Bose, 89 years, wife of late Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose, mother of Prof Sugata Bose, and Prof. Sumantra Bose, was admitted in Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata on 16th Feb, 2020 with irregular heart beat( Atrial Fibrillation) under Dr. Kunal Sarkar & CTVS Team.

She sustained a cerebral infarct (stroke) in the evening of 17th February and remained in critical condition, under treatment in critical care unit of Medica Superspecialty Hospital."

She remained the Lok Sabha MP for three terms between 1996 and 2004.

Being originally a Congress leader, she later joined the TMC. 

Bose, who taught at the City College in Kolkata for 40 years, got married in 1955 to Sisir Kumar Bose who was the nephew of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

During her third term as the MP, Bose had served as Chairperson of Committee of External Affairs, Member of General Purposes Committee, Member of Joint Committee on Patents (Second Amendment) Bill, 1999, and Member of Committee of Official Language.

She was also a columnist in multiple English and Bengali newspapers and magazines.

Mourning her death, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo, Mamata Banerjee, tweeted, "I lost someone respected, loved & admired by me. Saddened & shocked to hear about the demise of Krishna Basu, ex-TMC MP & wife of freedom fighter Dr. Sisir Bose. Being a part of Netaji's family, she was a revered social reformer, renowned poet & a courageous educationalist." 

She added, "Krishna di was a mother to her son's Sumantra & Sugata, daughter Sarmila as well as the whole Trinamool family. Her immense contribution to Indian society & Bengali culture will be revered for times to come."

West Bengal Minister and Kolkata Mayor, Firhad Hakim, said, "It is a huge loss. She used to provide guidance to all of us. She always used to give the right advice. Feeling bad that we won't be getting advice from her any more."

Bose's mortal remains will be taken to Netaji Bhavan and will be kept there till 8 pm.
