Delhi/IBNS: The violent clashes over the citizenship law in the national capital claimed the life of a policeman and a civilian on Monday. Hours after the policeman lost his life and several others were injured in the violent clash between anti and pro CAA protesters in North-East Delhi, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla said that the situation in the violence-hit areas of Delhi had been brought under control.

Sources in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that eight companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), including two Rapid Action Force (RAF) companies and one company of women security personnel, had been deployed to the area while senior police and administrative officials are there in the North-East districts of national capital.

Earlier in the afternoon, situation turned violent in various places in North-East Delhi after pro CAA protesters engaged in a clash with anti CAA agitators.

A petrol pump, several houses and vehicles, including police cars and a public bus, were set on fire.

When police tried to intervene in the clash, protesters had started pelting stones aiming at police force while it was witnessed that an 'unidentified' man fired multiple round of bullets in front of cops.

A head constable of Delhi Police, Rattan Lal, was killed after being hit by a stone in Gokulpuri area while several other policemen, including a DCP, were seriously injured during the hour-long violence.

Besides the cop, another civilian was also killed in the violent clashes.

During the clashes, Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) had to close all entry and exit gates of five metro stations in the violence-hit zone.

Besides Delhi Police, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lieutenant Governor and leaders of all political parties urged people to maintain peace and harmony in the state.

Till the last update came in, there is no report of fresh violence in North-East Delhi as local police along with paramilitary forces are currently carrying out route-march in the violence-hit areas.
