NE Delhi violence: Amit Shah appeals for peace, says rumours should be stopped
New Delhi/UNI: Urging the people not to believe in rumours after violence erupted in Northeast Delhi following clashes between supporters and protesters of Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in which seven people, including a head constable, lost their lives, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday appealed for peace.
Mr Shah made his appeal after his meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, sources said.
According to the sources, a peace committee will be formed that will work with political parties and police for better coordination.
The Union Home Minister appealed to everyone to maintain peace and cooperate with each other.
The Home Ministry has ruled out calling out the army, stating adequate central forces and police are on the ground, the sources said
After meeting the Home Minister, Mr Kejriwal said the Union Home Minister has assured there won't be shortage of police support.
In the wake of the violence between CAA supporters and protesters, Mr Shah on Tuesday held a meeting with Delhi LG Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and leaders of political parties.
In the meeting, Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik, Congress leader Subhash Chopra, BJP's Manoj Tiwari and Ramveer Singh Bidhuri were present.
Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and Intelligence Bureau Director Arvind Kumar were among those who attended the meeting.
Mr Shah convened the meeting to discuss the prevailing situation in Delhi, a Home Ministry official said.
The move came after the Union Home Minister reviewed the law and order situation in the national capital last night following the violence which erupted northeast Delhi.
"The situation is very tense. We are continuously receiving calls related to incidents of violence from northeast Delhi," Delhi Police said in a statement.
A head constable was among seven people killed and at least 50 others, including several paramilitary and Delhi Police personnel, were injured as violence escalated over the CAA in northeast Delhi on Monday.
