Chairman-AAI reviews various airport projects in North East

Guwahati/IBNS: Chairman of Airports Authority of India, Arvind Singh on his maiden visit to Northeastern Region reviewed various projects and operations of NER Airports at the AAI regional headquarters, NER Guwahati on Wednesday.

During his visit Arvind Singh interacted with Senior officers, Airport Directors of major airports in NER.

In his meeting with the Chief Secretary of Assam, Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Arvind discussed several aviation-related infrastructure issues and upcoming projects in the state.

Assam has the most number of operational airports in the region namely- Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Tezpur, Jorhat and Lilabari and they together agreed for development of more airports which could meet the expectations of the local people as well as the tourist coming here.

Issues related to land, new Greenfield airport projects and connectivity to remote locations were also discussed in media. 

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati is considered the gateway to the northeastern states and a major hub for the export of local products and the tourism.

The meeting focused on enhancing more cargo facilities for the benefit of farmers and scope for agri-business in the state as well as the adjoining areas. The passenger movement at the LGBI Airport has already crossed 6 million mark in 2019.

Considering the need of hour, AAI is constructing a world-class new integrated passenger terminal building at Guwahati which will be equipped with all major facilities. And the new airport building is expected to be operational by 2021.

Arvind Singh also visited the construction site of the New Guwahati Airport terminal building and reviewed the progress of the project.

He was accompanied by J.T Radhakrishna, GM & project In-charge of the airport where he briefed chairman about the salient features and future ready Terminal building.

In the later half, the Chairman, AAI took a review meeting with all the Airport Directors of NER airports at the regional Headquarters office Guwahati.

Airport Directors from Guwahati, Agartala, Imphal, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Jorhat, Shillong, Dimapur actively took part in the review meet and appraised Chairman, AAI about the present status and the future prospects of their airports.

The focus point of the review meeting, in general, emphasized on enhancing the existing passenger facilities at the airport and planning for the future expansion of the terminal buildings.
