New Delhi/IBNS: In a major development for the country's defense production sector, India has bagged the order of supplying four Swathi Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) worth $40 million, beating countries like Russia and Poland, said reports.

The mobile artillery-locating phased array radar has been developed by the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO’s) Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) Bengaluru-based laboratory and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

The reports said Armenia chose the Indian radar system after conducting detailed trials of the radar systems offered by Russia and Poland.

The Swathi radar system has been designed to detect and track incoming artillery and rocket fire to determine the point of origin for counter-battery fire. It is a mobile artillery-locating phased array radar that can detect seven shells and mortars fired simultaneously from different locations within a 50-km radius.

India has deployed this radar along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir to detect incoming artillery fire from Pakistan.

The deal is being viewed as a major boost to government's Make In India aspirations.
