Kolkata's Presidency students withdraw blockade from College Street after 24 hrs
Kolkata/IBNS: Resident-students of Kolkata's Presidency University, who were blocking College Street-M.G. Road crossing since Thursday 5 pm. over several hostel related issues, withdrew their road blockade on Friday evening, after nearly 24 hours.
"As general people were facing trouble due the road blockade, we have decided to withdraw it, but, our sit-in-demonstration will continue inside campus until our VC meets us to discuss the issues," a protesting student said.
Demanding the reopening of entire Hindu Hostel and reemployment of old mess-staffers in the hostel, students of Presidency University at a large number had blocked the crossing of College Street and M.G. Road in central part of the city since Thursday evening, bringing traffic movement in the area to a standstill.
Since January, these resident-students have been agitating over the issues and in February, they had gheraoed the VC and dean of students for three and five days respectively.
Earlier in July 2015, Presidency authority had shut down the century-old Hindu Hostel for repairing and renovation and shifted 150 of its boarders to few rented accommodations in New Town area.
Meanwhile, in 2018, after failing to meet multiple preset deadlines, few wards and floors of renovated Hindu Hostel were handed over to the resident-students.
