Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar sentenced to 10 years in jail for death of Unnao rape victim's father

New Delhi/IBNS: Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Sengar has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the death of Unnao rape victim's father, media reports said.

He has also been fined Rs. 10 lakh.

A Delhi court last week convicted Sengar and others for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the death of the rape victim's father in judicial custody.

Six other convicts are also awarded jail term.

Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for raping a minor in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao in 2017.

He was also asked to pay a fine of Rs. 25 lakh in the case and also Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to the rape survivor.

Another accused in the rape case, who was identified as Shashi Singh, was acquitted.

The BJP expelled Sengar following an uproar over the case after the rape survivor in July this year met with an accident in which the former saffron party member was an accused.

Both the victim and her lawyer were critically injured in a July 28 car-truck collision on the National Highway near Rae Bareli in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Two aunts of the woman had been killed in the collision.

The rape case was filed when the young woman attempted to immolate herself outside the residence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in April 2018.

On the orders of the apex court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe in all the five cases related to the alleged rape.
