Cong says it will stand by Govt to fight on Coronavirus, 'urges' no data should be hidden

"We will help spread the word on preventive measures and also help with any emergency services, we will also organise any emergency services if needed," said Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken, moments after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation over Coronavirus threat.

Referring that the Congress has been continuously urging the government to prepare the battle against the deadly virus, Maken said, "On February 12, Rahul Gandhi had urged the Government to prepare for the battle against Coronavirus. On March 6, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had written to all our state Chief Ministers and asked them as well to prepare for the fight against Coronavirus."

"We also want to suggest some measures to the government, not as a criticism. India's population to coronavirus test ratio is way behind other countries and hence we urge the government to look into it," he said.

He said that at a time when cases are being reported from remote areas as well, the party urged the government to increase the country's testing facilities and capacity.

"We also urge that all staff assisting with tests and checks should be provided adequate personal protection equipment," he added.

"We also urge the government to look at coming up with more isolation facilities, ICU beds and containment zones. We have no information if this is being worked on and hence we urge the government to prioritise this," Maken said.

The Congress spokesperson also urged the government that no data should be hidden and added that "countries that have been able to deal with this with even a little success are those where there has been transparency of data, correct numbers were reported and hence people could be warned for prevention."

Referring to the Prime Ministers appeal to citizens for a curfew on Sunday, Maken said Congress will help in all efforts,"but we urge the government that if there's a need for a complete lockdown, the government must prepare for it beginning now on how to deal with essential services."

"While the Prime Minister has urged for social distancing, special attention should be paid to jhuggi clusters and help should be extended to those who are unable to afford or stock on rations," he added.
