New Delhi/IBNS: Seven years after Nirbhaya was brutally gangraped and murdered in the national capital, leaving the country shocked and triggering series of protests demanding justice for her, all the four convicts in the 2012 case were executed at Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Friday.

Ending a long legal battle, which was extended till late Friday morning, just hours before four were hanged, the execution took place at 5.30 am.

All the four people convicts were identified as Akshay Thakur (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Mukesh Singh (32).

According to media reports, all the four men have been declared dead after doctor examined them.

The hanging was confirmed by Sandeep Goel, Director-General of Tihar jail, reported UNI.

A DDU forensic team of five members will conduct the post-mortem at 0800 hrs under the supervision of Dr B N Mishra, sources told the news agency.

The hanging took place after the Supreme Court rejected the last petition filed by one of the four convicts to stop the execution.

Seeking the late-night hearing, AP Singh, the lawyer of the convicts, had approached the apex court.

The judges of the Supreme Court held a special sitting to hear the petition.

At 0230 hrs, the Supreme Court rejected the last-ditch attempt by their lawyer A P Singh to delay the execution.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court heard a petition to stall the hanging of the convicts.

The petition was filed by Akshay Kumar Singh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma in an attempt to get a last-minute reprieve from their execution on Friday.

Reacting to the execution, Asha Devi, the victim's mother, told media: "Justice was delayed but we got it. I thank my government officials and the President today. Nirbhaya got justice. Today is March 20, this day is dedicated to the girls and women of the nation."

"My daughter will no more return to this world. However, I will continue this fight for other girls of the nation so that these incidents are not repeated," she said.

She said the execution showed that our judiciary will not save people who commit crime like this one.

Nirbhaya's father said: "The fight will continue. We will try to find out what loopholes are there in the legal system of the country in cases like this and we will submit it to the government to chnage it."

He urged parents to change their thoughts and stop distinguishing between a girl and a boy.

"Stop distinguishing between a girl and a boy. We need to change the mentality," he told media.

This is the first time four people were hanged simultaneously.

A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who came to be known as Nirbhaya, was gang raped and savagely assaulted in a moving bus in South Delhi area on December 16, 2012 and died fortnight later.

The incident had left India shocked.
