Kolkata/IBNS: A 45-year-old man was killed and another youth was seriously injured during a clash between two groups of villagers over setting up of a quarantine centre at Talibpur village under Parui Police Station limits in Birbhum district of West Bengal on Saturday late night, reports said on Sunday.

After local authorities had proposed to convert a local high school's empty hostel building into a quarantine centre to isolate Covid-19 suspects, villagers of Talibpur under Suri II development block area split into two groups.

They later clashed.

During the hour-long violent confrontation, several bombs were hurled and few round of bullets were also fired, according to local reports.

A middle-aged villager, who has been identified as Sk. Nasiruddin, was killed during the clash while another local youth was admitted to a hospital with gunshot wound.

Later, heavy police force rushed to the village and they brought the situation under control.

Officials said additional security force has been deployed in the region to avoid any further escalation of situation.

Police, however, have initiated probe into the matter while at least seven local persons have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in the incident.
