New Delhi/IBNS: India on Friday witnessed the highest single-day jump so far both in terms of deaths and the total numbers of Coronavirus cases. The country recorded 37 deaths and 896 new COVID-19 positive cases taking the total tally to 6,761.

The total number of deaths touched a whopping number of 206.

As per the John Hopkins University's Coronavirus live tracking map, the death toll in India stands at 229 with the total number of infected cases being 6725.

The surge in the number of cases also coincides with the declaration by the World Health Organisation earlier in the day that India entered the 'Stage 3' or 'Community Transmission' but retracted later.

Meanwhile, a day ahead of the Centre's call, Punjab has extended the state-wide lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly Novel Coronavirus till May 1.

After holding a meeting with his cabinet ministers, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has announced the decision.

"Given the seriousness of the situation arising out of Covid19, Cabinet has decided to extend lockdown & curfew till 1st May. These are difficult times & I appeal to all to #StayHomeStaySafe & strictly observe health safeguards as you have done so far, for which I am thankful," Singh said on Twitter.

The Centre is also mulling over the lockdown extension despite huge economic strains.

Odisha became the first state on Thursday to extend the shutdown across all its districts till Apr 30.

As the number of positive COVID-19 cases is surging at an increasing rate across the country, Modi on Saturday will meet all Chief Ministers via video conference to take a call on the shutdown.

Ignoring the hurt on Indian economy due to the 21-day massive, unprecedented lockdown in a country of 1.3 billion people, at least six states have felt the extension of the lockdown would be the wisest decision at this hour.

Globally the Coronavirus pandemic has infected 1,622,167 people across 185 countries, John Hopkins COVID-19 map claimed. The total death toll across the world stands at 97,264.
