New Delhi/IBNS: Targeting journalist Shekhar Gupta for allegedly not speaking up against the spread of fake news during COVID-19,  Arnab Goswami, the founding member of Republic TV, resigned from the Editors’ Guild of India during a live TV show on Monday.

Goswami resigned from the top journalist body of the country during a TV show that was discussing the silence by ‘liberals’ on the lynching of three people in Maharashtra’s Palghar.

Gupta is the president of the Guild.

“Shekhar Gupta, you hear from me first. Whatever remaining credibility of the Editors’ Guild of India, has been destroyed by its abject silence on a series of fake news stories. It has been a self-serving organisation,” he said targeting Gupta during the TV show.

Goswami accused Gupta of leading the compromise on journalism.

“I have been a member of the Editors’ Guild of India for a long time and I, on live television, resign for its absolute compromise on editorial ethics, for being an organisation for operation only for personal interests. I accuse you Shekhar Gupta of leading the compromise on journalism for not speaking on incidents like this," he said.

“The day Shekhar Gupta has the courage to speak up against the fake news during COVID-19, then the guild will have some value. Otherwise the group is just of only has-beens,” Goswami, who was formerly with Times Nows before helming Republic TV, said.

Palghar episode:

At least 110 people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of three men, including two sadhus, on the suspicion of being thieves in Gadchinchale village of Palghar in Mumbai, late on Thursday night. The incident reportedly occurred before policemen.

According to police, the victims were residents of Kandivali in Mumbai and were travelling in a Ford Ecosport to Silvassa to attend a funeral, said media reports.

The victims have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Nilesh Telgane (35), the driver of the car they were travelling in, and Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70).

The trio, including the 70-year-old sadhu, was attacked by people following rumours that they were involved in the kidnapping of children for extracting their organs, including kidneys, said a media report.

According to police, a raging crowd gathered within minutes and started attacking the SUV with sticks, irons rods and fists, said a report.
