COVID-19 death toll surges to 40 in TN, 600 fresh cases reported today
Chennai/UNI: The Coronavirus death toll in Tamil Nadu climbed to 40 with three more deaths, while the total number of positive cases crossed the 6,000-mark, as 600 new infections were reported on a single day in the state on Friday.
A 78-year-old man with comorbidities from Tambaram in Chengalpattu, admitted on April 30 in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) died at 2100 hours on Thursday night.
Another 56-year-old man from Chennai admitted on May 6 in RGGGH succumbed at 2350 hours late last night, while another 83-year-old man with comorbidities from Tirunelveli, admitted on May 6 in Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital died at 0230 hours in the early hours of Thursday, taking the COVID toll to 40, Health Minister Dr.C.Vijayabaskar said via video conferencing.
Of the total 40 deaths, 24 were reported in Chennai, three in Chengalpattu, two each in Madurai, Villupuram and one each in Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Kancheepuram, Theni, Thiruvallur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Vellore.
The number of coronavirus positive cases reported on Friday was 600 (405 men and 195 women) as a total of 6,009 people have tested positive so far in Tamil Nadu that included 4,135 men, 1,872 women and two transgenders.
He said of the total positive cases, as many as 1,589 persons were linked to the single largest cluster - Koyambedu market in the city, as fresh cases were reported in as many as 18 districts.
Of the 600 cases, Chennai once again topped with 399 cases and most of them were linked to the Koyambedu market, taking the city's coronavirus tally to 3043.
Next to Chennai, the Thiruvallur district reported 75 cases, followed by Cuddalore (34), Chengalpattu (26), Villupuram (21), Tiruvannamalai (11), Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari (8 each), Tirunelveli (4), Virudhunagar (3), Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Madurai (2 each), Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, Theni, Thirupathur and Trichy (1 each).
Of the total 6,009 cases, 303 (161 men, 142 women) were in the 0-12 age group, 5,282 (3,704 men, 1,576 women and transgender 2) in 13-60 age group and 424 (270 men and 154 women) in 60-plus age group.
District wise, Chennai continued to remain on top of the COVID chart with 3,043 cases, followed by Cuddalore (390), Thiruvallur (270), Ariyalur (246), Villupuram (226), Chengalpattu (184), Coimbatore (146), Tiruppur (114), Madurai (113) and Dindigul (107), the Minister said.
A total number of 58 people, who have tested positive, were discharged on Friday, as the number of cured patients increased to 1,605.
Till date, a total of 2,16,416 samples of persons have been taken and sent for testing of which 6,009 persons tested positive, 2,09,495 negative, while testing of 912 samples of persons was under process and 10,009 were repeat samples of same persons.
The total number of persons tested till date was 2,06,407 which included 13,833 persons on Friday.
The State has 52 testing facilities - 36 government and 16 private labs.
