Srinagar/UNI: Farmers in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have demanded the authorities to reopen the Mughal Road, which has remained closed for the past about six months due to accumulation of snow, for transportation of their produce to other parts of the country.

The historic 86-km-long road, which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was closed due to snow in December last year, official sources said.

In March this year, the snow clearance operation was launched from both sides, but due to the Novel Coronavirus threat, the operation was hampered, they added. Snow clearance operation has again started, but it will take some time to put through the road, said the sources.

Farmers, who had stored their apple crops in cold storages last year and cherry growers have demanded immediate reopening of the road for transportation of their produce to Jammu and other parts of the country.

However, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the road connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir have been through for traffic.

A traffic police spokesperson on Monday said the 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu was through for traffic. However, only vehicles carrying essentials are allowed to move.

He added that security forces had been advised to undertake journey on the highway, only after confirming status from the traffic police control units.

He said only essential commodity vehicles will be allowed on Srinagar-Leh National Highway on Monday.
