Assam: Two police constables arrested for beating a 51-year-old man to death

Guwahati: TwoAssam police constables have arrested on charge of brutally beating a51-year-old man to death.

Assam police had arrested two constables deployed at Jajori police station in Assam’s Nagaon district after the 51-year-old man identified as Phanidhar Bora who was also the secretary of Village Defence Party (VDP), died at a private hospital in Guwahati.

The arrested police constables were identified as Ataur Rahman and Paresh Sharma.

According to the reports, the police constables and the deceased person were engaged in a scuffle on Tuesday night and the arrested constable duo had beaten the person.

Phanidhar Bora, who sustained injuries was admitted to a hospital in Nagaon and the doctors referred him to Guwahati in critical condition.

The 51-year-old man was died at a hospital on Thursday night.

Following the incident, a large numbers of local people had gheraoed Jajori police station and demanded the authority to take stern action against the constable duo.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) GP Singh on Friday had visited the area and took stock the situation.

The top Assam cop said that, police had already arrested the two constables.

“Following the directive of the DGP, the officer-in-Charge of Jajori police station has been transferred to police headquarter. Both constables have been arrested. I directed the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Nagaon district to submit charge sheet within 15 days. It is a criminal act. We will apply to seek permission for hearing the case in fast track court,” GP Singh said.

On the other hand, Assam police has given an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the family of the deceased person.
