Bandh like situation as Chennai witnesses total lockdown today
Chennai/UNI: A bandh like situation prevailed as normal life came to a grinding halt and roads wore a deserted look in Tami Nadu, which is observing a total shutdown, without any relaxations on Sunday to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
This comes as part of the 12-day intense lockdown in Chennai and its three neighbouring districts-Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpet districts-where there has been significant increase in positive cases.
The intense lockdown started on June 19 and would be in force till June 30.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswmi while announcing the complete lockdown for 12 days said it would be 'total and complete' without any relaxations on Sundays--June 21 and 28, to ensure that people stay indoors.
In line with the Chief Minister's announcement, a total and complete shutdown was observed today as life came to a grinding halt.
Except for milk, medical, pharmacies and hospitals, all other 20 relaxations announced during the 12-day lockdown were not in force.
All groceries, vegetable shops, hotels and restaurants, which were allowed to function with restricted timings during the 12-day lockdown, were totally shut.
Chennai City Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan said more than 2,000 two-wheelers, cars and other vehicles were seized during the last two days for violating the lockdown guidelines and said the curbs would be even stricter today.
However, those appearing for JIPMER exams would be allowed by producing the exam hall tickets.
He said 288 checkposts were set up and camera fitted drones were deployed to effectively implement for strict enforcement of lockdown.
“Drone cameras will be used to monitor the movement of people who roam around or venture out without any reason," he added.
However, Amma canteens were allowed to function to ensure that free breakfast, lunch and dinner was served to the people.
