Bhubaneswar/UNI: Odisha Director General of Police Abhay today dismissed former Biramitrapur Police Station IIC Anand Chandra Majhi from service for his alleged involvement in the gang-rape of a minor tribal girl at Biramitrapur Police Station area in Sundergarh district and then forcing her to undergo abortion.

The DGP has dismissed Inspector Ananda Chandra Majhi former IIC of Biramitrapur Police Station from service.

In his official Twitter handle, the  DGP wrote: “The  conduct of the police officer was shameful. Our apologies to the young girl.”

Majhi was placed under suspension after a hue and cry over the issue.

The DGP had ordered a Crime Branch inquiry into the incident yesterday.

A four-member crime branch team led by a lady DSP left for Sundergarh yesterday and took charge of the investigation from the local police. The Superintendent of Police of crime branch will monitor the inquiry.

As per the allegations, six persons, including the Biramitrapur former IIC and his colleagues have been accused of raping the girl in the Police Station for several weeks and forcibly terminating her pregnancy.

The Child Welfare Committee had also filed a complaint with the Raiboga Police Station against six persons including the Biramitrapur IIC, a doctor, step father of the victim and three others in connection with the incident.

Police swung into action after public outcry over the issue and the alleged attempt to hush up the matter.

A delegation of the  BJP had called on the DGP two days back and alleged that since police personnel are involved in the case, police was not taking any action and shielding the culprits.

The BJP members demanded the DGP to direct the Police to register a case under SC/ ST Atrocities Act, pay compensation of Rs 8.25 lakh and  provide protection to the family members of the victims’ families.

BJP state General Secretary Prithiraj Harichandan yesterday demanded the government to inquire into the case by constituting SIT and threatened his party will continue agitation till justice was meted out to the victim minor tribal girl.
