Uttar Pradesh: Eight policemen killed in firing in Kanpur

Kanpur/IBNS: At least eight policemen were shot dead when they went to  arrest a criminal wanted for murder in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

The policemen were shot from all sides, reports said.

A Deputy Superintendent of Police, Devendra  Kumar Mishra, three sub-inspectors and four constables were killed in Dikru village, which is 150 km from state capital Lucknow, reports NDTV.

Teams from three police stations had went to the village to search Vikas Dubey.

Dubey has been reportedly charged in 60 criminal cases.

"The intention was to arrest him. There was an ambush. The firing by criminals was from three sides and it was totally planned," Dinesh Kumar, Kanpur's police chief, told NDTV.

State Director General of Police (DGP) HC Awasthi told UNI that senior officials were on the spot while STF has been engaged to nab the culprits.

He said that the incident occurred around after 0100 hrs. ADG (Law and Order) has been rushed to the spot along with IG STF.

The DGP further said that the criminals along with the accused fled from the village after the crime but a massive manhunt has been launched to nab them.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath has condoled the death of the policemen.
