Covid: 'Stricter lockdown' in West Bengal containment zones begins
Kolkata/IBNS: "Stricter anti-Covid-19 lockdown" in all containment zones across the state of West Bengal began at 5 pm on Thursday.
There are 25 containment zones in West Bengal's capital city, Kolkata.
Howrah, one of the worst Covid-affected districts in the state, has 56 containment zones.
Police officials were spotted active on the road in forcing shops in containment zones to shut down post 5 pm.
The "stricter lockdown" will continue for the next seven days.
Addressing a press conference at state headquarters Nabanna here on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requested all people to wear masks.
"I am once again requesting all to wear masks. Will it be nice if I impose a penalty of Rs. 2000 on poor people for not wearing masks? I am asking police to send people back to their homes immediately if they are seen without masks" the CM said.
Though the state government has imposed the "stricter lockdown" amid the spike in Covid-19, all containment zones across the country were under lockdown since the beginning of Unlock 1 on Jun 1.
