Prashant Bhushan, Arun Shourie, journalist N Ram challenge Contempt of Court Act in Supreme Court
New Delhi/IBNS: Advocate Prashant Bhushan, former Union Minister Arun Shourie and journalist N Ram challenged the Contempt of Court Act in the Supreme Court on Saturday, media reports said.
Bhushan, Shourie and Ram said the Contempt of Court Act had a "chilling effect on the freedom of speech and expression", which is guaranteed by the Constitution.
The three have asked the court to quash the Act.
This comes days after the Supreme Court issued a notice to Bhushan seeking his response on why action should not be taken against him for levelling allegations against the judiciary in micro-blogging site Twitter.

Bhushan wrote on Twitter in June, "When historians in future look back at the last 6 years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal Emergency, they will particularly mark the role of the Supreme Court in this destruction, & more particularly the role of the last 4 CJIs".
The Supreme Court had taken contempt proceedings against Bhushan on its own.
The court will hear the matter next on Aug 5.
