West Bengal Govt further changes its bi-weekly lockdown calendar

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal government on Monday changed the dates of its bi-weekly lockdown for the third time to contain the spread of Covid-19, officials said.

According to the latest order issued by the state government, state-wide complete lockdown will be enforced on August 5 (Wednesday), August 8 (Saturday), August 20 (Thursday), August 21 (Friday), August 27 (Thursday), August 28 (Friday) and August 31 (Monday).

"Several requests and appeals have been received from different quarters to relax complete lockdown on certain dates which are coinciding with some festivals and local community-based customs to enable people observe festivals and local customs," the government order read.

Senior state government officials said that in view of the requests received and in due consideration of the public sentiment, the lockdown calendar had been changed again.

Earlier in July, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced to observe bi-weekly complete lockdown across the state in addition to the ongoing lockdown in broad-based containment zones till August 31.

Dates of the bi-weekly lockdown, which were set by the CM, have been changed thrice so far.

Reacting on the matter, CPI-M MLA Sujan Chakraborty said that the Mamata-government had turned the lockdown decision into a farce with no logic.
