New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday delivered his seventh consecutive Independence Day speech where he said Jammu and Kashmir region will vote to elect a new Assembly soon.

"Delimitation process is currently underway in Jammu and Kashmir. Once it is completed, an election will be held in the Union Territory," Modi made the announcement.

He said his government is committed to see the region gets its own Chief Minister and ministers.

"This has been a significant one year for Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

"This one year is the year of the rights received by the women and the Dalits in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

Amid COVID-19 pandemic, India is observing Independence Day on Saturday.

Article 370, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was scrapped by the Indian government on Aug 5, 2019.

This year marked the first anniversary of the event.
