BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, 16 other lawmakers test positive for COVID-19 on first day of Monsoon Session of Parliament

New Delhi: BJP MP  Meenakshi Lekhi and 16 other lawmakers have tested positive for COVID-19 on the first day of the Monsoon session of the Parliament which started on Monday.

Meenakshi Lekhi said she is in good health and spirits.

Lekhi tweeted: "After the routine Parliament test for COVID & genome test it’s confirmed that I have tested positive for the virus. I am currently in good health & spirits. I request everyone who has been recently in contact with me to get tested. Together We will fight & defeat Corona."

Ahead of the start of the Monsoon Session, Indian PM Narendra Modi told the media  that there should not be any casual approach till COVID-19 vaccine is discovered.

He thanked MPs for preferring to perform their duties and attend the Monsoon session despite COVID-19 pandemic.

" There is Corona and there is duty. MPs chose the path of duty. I congratulate and express gratitude to them," the PM said.

"We need to follow all precautions," he said.

"We hope the scientists from any part of the world will be successful in finding a vaccine to cure the disease soon," he said.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament will begin from Monday by taking necessary precautions amid COVID-19 pandemic.

The session will be held for 18 days this time.

"The fourth session of  17th Lok Sabha and 252nd Session of Rajya Sabha is scheduledto be held on Monday, 14th September, 2020 and subject to exigencies of Government Business, may conclude on Thursday, 1st October, 2020," read a government statement.

 Apart from the listed agenda of bills, a record plunge in the economy, marked by the first contraction in four decades, Chinese aggression at the border and the Covid-19 crisis are expected to be discussed in Parliament in this period of 18 days.

"The Session will provide a total of 18 sittings spread over a period of 18 days (all the days including Saturdays and Sundays of the ensuing session will be working days)," read the statement.

A total of 47 items have been identified for being taken up during the Monsoon Session, 2020 which includes 45 bills and 2 financial items.

This will be the first Parliament session being held amid the Covid-19 pandemic
