'No death of migrant workers because government didn't count?' Rahul Gandhi slams Centre

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday took to social media to slam the Narendra Modi government which has said there is no question of compensation as there is no data on the migrant workers' deaths during the anti-Covid-19 lockdown.

Gandhi tweeted, "The Modi government does not know how many migrant workers had died and how many people lost their jobs during the lockdown. There was no death because the government didn't count? It is sad that the deaths had no impact on the government. While the entire world watched their deaths, it was only the Modi government which had no knowledge of it."

Triggering massive criticism, the Union Labour Ministry on Monday issued a statement that the government had no data on the deaths of migrant workers.

"No such data is maintained. Question does not arise in view of the above," Union Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said as quoted by NDTV in a written response to a question asking whether any compensation has been provided to the deceased's families.

A huge number of migrant workers had taken to their feet in a bid to return to their home states during the unprecedented lockdown which was called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last week of March to stem the spread of Novel Coronavirus.

As per media reports, several migrant workers had died on road with a few of them meeting with accidents while walking back to their homes.

It was only after weeks of lockdown, the central government had arranged some special trains to reduce the ordeal of the poor labourers of the country.
