Assam CM orders CID probe into journalist death amid protests across state

Guwahati/IBNS: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered a CID probe into the death of a journalist of the state.

Parag Bhuyan – the Kakopathar correspondent of Assamese news Channel Pratidin Time, was critically injured after he was knocked down by a vehicle near his home on National Highway-15 on Wednesday around 8-15pm and later he succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

Following the incident, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered a CID probe into the incident.

The Assam Chief Minister Office (CMO) tweeted – “Taking note of various allegations regarding the death of senior journalist Parag Bhuyan, CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal has directed a CID inquiry into the matter.”

Meanwhile, the vehicle was identified by CCTV footage and Tinsukia district police have arrested the driver and handyman of the vehicle from Arunachal Pradesh.

In a statement Assam police said that, the vehicle after causing the accident, immediately fled away from the PO towards Dirak side of Kakopathar  police station near Assam-Arunachal Pradesh inter-state border.

On the other hand, Tinsukia district Superintendent of Police (SP) Shiladitya Chetia said that, police have found the vehicle at Namsai area in Arunachal Pradesh and arrested both driver and handyman of the vehicle.

“We have already started our investigation and also seized the CCTV footage and it will be used as a digital evidence,” Shiladitya Chetia said.

53-year-old Parag Bhuyan was the brother of former minister Jagdish Bhuyan and he worked as a local correspondent for Pratidin Time from Kakopathar area in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district and was also the Vice-President of Tinsukia Press Club.

Meanwhile, various organizations have alleged that, he was killed by miscreants for exposing corruption and illegal activities in his area under Tinsukia district.

Various organizations, journalists have staged protests across the state and demanded justice for Parag Bhuyan.
