As counter to BJP, Mamata Banerjee announces state holiday on Birsa Munda's birth anniversary
Kolkata/IBNS: Days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah controversially paid respect to India's tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said her government will declare a state holiday on the birth anniversary of the folk hero.
Addressing a rally in Bankura, Banerjee said, "Instead of paying respect to Birsa Munda, the Union Home Minister had paid tribute to someone else. They can't even respect a person. In future, we will declare a state holiday on Birsa Munda's birth anniversary."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his state visit in early November had mistakenly paid tributes to some other regional leader while intending to show respect to Birsa Munda.
Banerjee on Monday also took a potshot at Shah for allegedly faking eating with one Dalit family.
"Unlike central leaders, I don't make fake visits in the homes of SC people. They order food from restaurants and eat the homes of people belonging to Scheduled Castes. My visit to people today was spontaneous," she said.
