First phase of Kashmir DDC elections underway
Jammu/IBNS: The first phase of the District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir is underway on Saturday.
In the first phase, 43 constituencies are up for grab.
Over 1,400 candidates are in the fray.
Though the polling percentage is lower amid the cold weather, the voting is likely to go up in the later hours.
One of the voters, who cast his mandate at a government school in Kupwara, said, "We have suffered a lot. Now it is good that the elections are taking place."
"I am hopeful that the candidates who will be elected will work for people," he added.
The elections are significant as the entire country is taking note of the developments in Jammu and Kashmir, which was stripped of its special status last year.
On Aug 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi government abrogated Articles 370 and 35A and bifurcated then state Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
