PM Modi launches construction of new parliament building
New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the groundbreaking ceremony near India Gate to mark the launch of the construction of the new parliament building on Central Vista which had been necessitated as the existing building cannot be upgraded to include modern communication, security features and earthquake safety without damaging the 93-year-old structure.
The Prime Minister performed the rituals as the six priests of Sringeri Mutt in Karnataka chanted Sanskrit mantras.
A total of 200 dignitaries, including ministers, foreign diplomats, MPs attended the ceremony
The proposed four storeyed new building is expected to be ready by August 2022 just before the 75th Independence Day of India.
The groundbreaking ceremony started at 12: 55 pm and the foundation stone was placed at 1300 hrs.
After the ceremony the Prime Minister will address the people at 1400 hrs.
The new building will sprawl over an area of 64,500 square meters and its cost of construction has been estimated at Rs 971 crore.
The Lok Sabha Chamber will have a seating capacity of 888 members and can be increased to 1224 members for joint session. Currently, Lok Sabha can accommodate 543 members.
Rajya Sabha will have a seating capacity of 384 members. Currently, 250 members can sit in Rajya Sabha.
