Farmers' protest: Delhi Jaipur Highway partially reopens after farmers take out tractor rally

Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi Jaipur Highway was partially closed on Sunday in view of the farmers' tractor rally to block the arterial road as part of intensified farm law protest continuing since the last 18 days.

One of the highways where agitation had been going on was opened as farmers lifted their blockade from Delhi-Noida border at Chilla.

As the farmers had announced plans to block the major connectors to the national capital, including Delhi's border with Gurgaon and other bordering areas with Haryana, at least 4,000 police personnel were deployed to stop the farmers on Saturday.

There had been no blockade on Delhi’s borders with Gurgaon and at other points of National Highway 8 that connects Delhi with Jaipur, said media reports.

The Delhi Jaipur Highway was closed this afternoon to stop farmers who had taken out a tractor rally from Shahjahanpur on the Rajasthan-Haryana border.

The farmers have announced an all-India hunger strike on Monday the demonstrators plan to hold in district offices.

Earlier on Sunday, farmers were seen gathering at Shahjahanpur with placards and shouting slogans as they marched slowly on the highway.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor joined the demonstration organised by party MPs from Punjab at Jantar Mantar.

"My friends here are asking the Centre to settle the matter with the farmers' unions and also to have winter session which should have been held by third week of November," he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, a BJP ally, on Saturday made a surprising claim that a breakthrough was possible in the next 24-48 hours.

"I'm hopeful that there will be talks between the centre and the farmers will be fruitful. I'm hopeful that in the next 24 to 48 hours, there will be a final round of talks and the two sides will reach a conclusive solution," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

On Saturday, Delhi Police had deployed additional forces and concrete barriers at different points of the national capital after farmers announced escalation of their protests and threatened to block two major connectors to Delhi-- the Yamuna Expressway and the Delhi-Jaipur Highway.
