Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls likely in March 2021, says WB Election Commission; Trinamool 'ready'
Kolkata/IBNS: The elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) are likely to be held in March 2021 ahead of the assembly polls, said the West Bengal Election Commission on Tuesday.
"As per the Supreme Court’s directive, the state government has sent a communication to us saying that the KMC polls may be held within four weeks after the final electoral roll is adopted by the SEC," a senior official of the poll panel said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
The electoral roll, which is getting revised, will be released on Jan 15, 2021.
The state election commission said it would hold the elections within four weeks after the adoption of the final electoral roll.
Elections to over 107 civic bodies spread across West Bengal are pending over the Covid-19 pandemic.
The state government is running all civic bodies, the terms of which have already expired, with boards of administrators.
Exuding confidence, the Trinamool, which has a brutal majority in the KMC, said it was ready for the polls.
"The State or Election Commission can ask for elections any time. We have worked throughout the year and are ready for whenever the elections will take place," West Bengal Minister and Trinamool leader, Bratya Basu, said on Monday.
