Kolkata/IBNS: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Saumitra Khan's wife Sujata Mondal Khan on Monday joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

Sujata joined the party in presence of veteran Trinamool MP Saugata Roy and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

Joining the party, Sujata said, "I had toiled for the party but now there is no respect in the BJP. Being a woman, it was tough for me to stay in the party."

"The BJP is only poaching the corrupt leaders from the Trinamool and trying to build its party. There are six Chief Ministerial and 13 Deputy CM faces from the BJP!."

"There is no CM face of the BJP in the state. I feel it would respectful for me as a woman to work for Mamata Banerjee," she added.

While Saumitra, a former Trinamool man, was barred from entering into his constituency over a court case, Sujata had successfully campaigned for her husband in the 2019 General Elections.

Sujata has not ruled out the possibility of her husband Saumitra's joining in the Trinamool.

"Who can tell that Saumitra Khan won't join the Trinamool?" she said.

Sujata's joining added to the ongoing political drama in the state as just a couple of days ago, former Trinamool strongman from Medinipur, Suvendu Adhikari, along with few others joined the BJP in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Calling out Adhikari, Sujata on Monday said, "He is a betrayer. After benefitting from the party for years, he jumped the ship like an opportunist. It is actually better for the Trinamool."
