Madurai/UNI: Thirty-three persons, including the bull tamers and bull owners were injured in the renowned “Jallikattu” (bull taming) event held as part of the ongoing Pongal festival at Palamedu in Madurai district on Friday.
Official sources said as many as 674 registered bulls and 600 bull tamers participated in eight rounds of the day-long event, which was held in compliance with COVID-19 guidelines.
The bull tamers were allowed to participate after RT-PCR tests for COVID-19, while the bulls underwent medical examination to ascertain if they were fit enough to compete the event.
Karthik, a resident of Karuppayurani village was adjudged the best bull tamer for taming 18 bulls and was given a car as a prize.
Earlier, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, R.B.Udhayakumar flagged off the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the government was considering giving a government job for the best bull tamer in the Jallikattu event.
