Amitabh Bachchan says Gita Gopinath has a beautiful face in KBC 12; Twitteratis slam him for linking beauty with brains
Mumbai/IBNS: Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund, Gita Gopinath today posted a short video from TV quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati in which host Amitabh Bachchan praises her for her looks and goes on to add that no one could link her looks with a subject like economy.
Though Gopinath has considered Big B's comment as a compliment, Twitteratis have accused the super star of being "sexist" and that it seemed the economist was also okay with it.
The video showed Gita Gopinath's picture displayed with the question "The economist in the picture has been the chief economist of which organisation since 2019 ?" After reading out the question, Amitabh Bachchan added that no one could link such a beautiful face with economy.
Posting the clip from the show, Gopinath wrote it was special to her, especially because she was a huge fab of Big B whom she addressed the greatest of all times.
Ok, I don't think I will ever get over this. As a HUGE fan of Big B @SrBachchan, the Greatest of All Time, this is special! pic.twitter.com/bXAeijceHE

However, the Bollywood actor's words in praise of Gopinath was criticised by many users on the microblogging site.
He says: "Her face is so beautiful that no one would connect her with the economy". This is so incredibly sexist and dumb and I wish given you champion had called it out as such instead of being starstruck. Your response which went viral seems to suggest you're ok with sexism.

So sad that he just had to mention your looks while pointing to your earned achievement. Bet you he wouldn't have made a mention if, say, @raghuramrajan or @kaushikcbasu were on the screen. Anyway, congratulations to you @GitaGopinath : keep the flag flying high!

How sexist the comment was, why can’t a beautiful face be not associated with economy? Beauty & brain can be together & need not be mutually exclusive!

I didn’t like the comment about linking beauty with brains. Stupid of Mr. Bachchan to suggest that beautiful women can’t be economists.

Frankly speaking, that was cheap. You are a scholar and all he could talk about was your face. We need to tell the next generation about long lasting achievements. Not some superficial short term beauty stuff. Big opportunity missed by Big B.

The contestant who was on the KBC's hot seat also responded.
(1/2) I was the contestant on hot seat, when this played out, and feel apologetic for not able to recognize you @GitaGopinath Mam. But I read about you after the show & very proud of your achievements! You are such an inspiration and your entire journey is so motivating!
