PM Modi and US President Joe Biden discuss political developments in Myanmar over phone call
New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Joe Biden discussed the recent political developments in Myanmar during their telephone conversations on February 8, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
India and the US have agreed to remain in contact and exchange assessments on the situation, it added.
Myanmar’s military announced a state of emergency in the country for the period of one year after the detention of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as President Win Myint and other members of the ruling party. The country went into its second nationwide internet shutdown in a week’s time on Saturday last after the military seized power and arrested the Southeast Asian country’s civilian leaders
In a weekly press briefing on Friday, MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said India believes that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld.
The matter was also discussed during the phone conversation between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his US counterpart Secretary Blinken on February 9.
"As immediate neighbours with close cultural and people-to-people ties as well as relations strengthened by exchanges in trade, economy, security and defence, India is closely monitoring developments in that country," he said.
"We will remain engaged with all concerned on this issue," he added.
The Myanmar army overthrew the democratically elected government on February 1 after accusing the party of its de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, of rigging the November elections.
