Guwahati/IBNS: Jailed activist Akhil Gogoi on Monday filed his nomination papers for the Sivasagar and Mariani assembly constituencies from Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH).

Akhil Gogoi is the president of Raijor Dal – backed by Assam’s farmer organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and 70 other organizations.

He is currently lodged in jail for over a year after the NIA booked him on charges of sedition and those related to terrorism under provisions of the UAPA following his involvement in the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protests in Assam.

Gogoi had filed his nomination papers to the returning officers via video conference.

Raijor Dal has made an alliance with another newly-floated political party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

On the other hand, AJP president Lurin Jyoti Gogoi had also filed his nomination papers for the Duliajan and Naharkatia assembly constituencies.

The candidates of the ruling BJP and its ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the opposition Congress along with other parties had filed their nominations to the returning officers.

The first phase of the poll will be held in 47 assembly constituencies in Upper Assam, Northern Assam and a part of Nagaon district on March 27.
