New Delhi/Kolkata/IBNS: A day after Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra questioned the candidature of nominated Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta for the forthcoming Bengal assembly election on BJP ticket, Dasgupta on Tuesday reportedly tendered his resignation as a Rajya Sabha MP.

Sharing the development on Twitter, Swapan Dasgupta wrote: "I have resigned from the Rajya Sabha today to commit myself totally to the fight for a better Bengal."

"I hope to file my nomination as BJP candidate for the Tarakeshwar Assembly seat in the next few days," he added.

Welcoming Dasgupta's decision to quit Rajya Sabha, Mahua Moitra said, "Thank you sir- we wish you well for the upcoming WB polls."

Earlier on Monday, Mahua Moitra, on Twitter, demanded the disqualification of Swapan Dasgupta as a nominated Rajya Sabha MP after the BJP had fielded him as a candidate in Tarakeshwar seat for the upcoming West Bengal assembly election.

Quoting the 10th Schedule of the Constitution, Moitra wrote on the micro blogging site: "Swapan Dasgupta is BJP candidate for WB polls. 10th Schedule of Constitution says nominated RS member to be disqualified if he joins any political party AFTER expiry of 6 months from oath. He was sworn in April 2016, remains unallied. Must be disqualified NOW for joining BJP."
