Personal attacks does not bother me: Priyanka on BJP

New Delhi, Apr 28 (IBNS): Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Gandhi on Monday said she is not affected by attacks made on her by India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"Personal attacks against me and my family does not bother me," she told mediapersons while campaigning for her mother at Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.

She also said she has the right to reject all these personalised attacks.

"If they choose to give me gifts, I can choose to reject them. The malice is with them, not me," she told media.

This comes after senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Monday attacked Priyanka and accused her of lowering the quality of political discourse.

"Mrs. Vadra has announced that she is not afraid of anyone. She has compared the BJP to 'the panic-stricken rats'. Family members are always entitled to help candidates in the elections. The candidate is preoccupied with many engagements. The family fills up the vacuum either in the election office or in the campaign where the candidate cannot reach. The family members are always instructed to be extra courteous and never be overbearing on political workers. They are advised not to even make any undignified references to the political rival," Jaitley wrote in his blog.

Attacking her further, the BJP leader posted, "Mrs. Vadra has lowered the quality of political discourse by her comments. Language provides a facility where even sharp comments can be made in a dignified manner."

"The Vadras are right that they need not be scared of anyone. They should only be scared of the law. Be the Vadras be ever so high, the law is above them. Law spares none, be it the rich, the famous or the related. If any of my family members started referring to my opponents as rats and reptiles I surely will be a worried man," he wrote.

Earlier in the day, the BJP demanded Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son and party vice president Rahul Gandhi to 'break silence' on Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra's alleged illegal land deals.

"Why is Sonia and Rahul silent on the issue like they are in all their corruption cases? They must break their silence and comment on Vadra's deals," said BJP leader Nirmala Seetharaman.

Amid a raging war-of-words between the Congress led by the Gandhi family and the BJP over corruption, the BJP hit back at the ruling party and Priyanka Gandhi asking which big heart had helped her husband Robert Vadra acquire lands illegally.

"Which big heart helped Vadra?" asked BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad in a press meet in New Delhi referring to Vadra's controversial land deals and Priyanka Gandhi's mocking of Modi's speeches to say that one does not need a 56 inch chest to rule or lead India but a big heart.

He asked why Robert Vadra, who is embroiled in a land controversy in Haryana and Rajasthan, did not buy land in non-Congress states.

"The two governments of Haryana and Rajasthan bent rules and favoured Robert Vadra in acquiring land. If Robert Vadra was such a great businessman, why did he not expand outside Rajasthan and Haryana?

"Land Ceiling act in Rajasthan permits only 175 acres land holding. Vadra allegedly purchased 1634 hectares," said Prasad.

"The Robert Vadra scam is a textbook case of corruption. It is not against any family. It is how rules and laws were bent to favour one man," said Prasad.
