New Delhi/IBNS: Former Union Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh died of Covid-19 on Thursday. He was 82.

Singh, a prominent leader in western Uttar Pradesh, was admitted to a private hospital in the national capital Delhi after testing positive for the virus on Apr 20.

Confirming his death, Singh's politician son Ajit Singh wrote on Twitter, "As our Nation confronts the horrific pandemic, it is our humble request to all those who wish to pay their respects, to please stay at home as far as possible.

"We must observe all safety protocols to keep ourselves and everyone around us healthy and safe. This would be the best way to honour Chaudhary Sahib as well as all those COVID warriors who are working night and day to protect us."

Condoling his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Saddened at the passing away of former Union Minister Chaudhary Ajit Singh ji. He was always dedicated to the welfare of farmers. He had deftly handled various portfolios at the Centre. My condolences to his family and near ones. Om Shanti."

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted, "The death of former Union Minister and farmer leader Chaudhary Ajit Singh ji is very sad. Humble reverence to him. It is a request to Lord Rama to grant the departed soul a place in his supreme abode and the grieving family to bear this immense grief."
