Lucknow/IBNS:  Samajwadi Party leader and Rampur Lok Sabha MP Azam Khan has been shifted to the ICU of Medanta Hospital here a day after he was admitted to the superspecialty hospital with coronavirus infection, according to the media reports.

The 72-year-old politician and his son Abdullah Khan had tested positive for Covid-19 on April 30 and were brought to the hospital from the Sitapur jail on Sunday, May 9, the media reports stated.

On Monday, Medanta Hospital said Azam Khan's oxygen requirement jumped to 10 litres per minute after which the doctors decided to shift him to the Covid-ICU.

"He is under intense treatment of the doctors there," the hospital said.

Khan's 30-year-old son Abdullah's condition is stable and satisfactory, they added.

Medanta Hospital (Lucknow) Director Dr Rakesh Kapoor had said on Sunday that Azam Khan's symptoms were moderate. He had fever, and was kept on four litres of oxygen while different tests were being conducted to fix a course of treatment for him, Kapoor had added.

Azam Khan, his son Abdullah and wife Tazeen Fatma were incarcerated since February last year in relation to various cases.

Tazeen Fatma had been granted in all the 34 cases last December by Allahabad High Court.

Media reports said on May 2, the jail administrators had tried to convince Azam Khan to get admitted to Lucknow's King George's Medical University but he refused to move out of jail.

However, he could be convinced on Sunday and was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Lucknow along with his son.
