Lucknow/IBNS: An Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot jail inmate shot dead two gangsters, one of them a close aide of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, and held five other prisoners hostage before he was killed by a police team on Friday morning, according to media reports.

The prisoner has been identified as Anshul Dixit but the police is yet to ascertain how he smuggled the 9mm pistol inside the prison, said a Hindustan Times report.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the director general of UP prisons Anand Kumar to submit the first report of the incident within six hours and conduct a detailed investigation into the crime along with Chitrakoot divisional commissioner DK Singh and inspector general (IG) Chitrakoot K Satya Narain, said the report.

The deceased have been identified as Mukeem alias Kala, a gangster charged with 61 criminal cases, including the murder of three police personnel, and Merajudden, a close aide of gangster and Bahujan Samajparty legislator Mukhtar Ansari, the HT report informed.

The incident occurred soon after 10am when the prisoners came out of their barracks and Dixit suddenly began raining bullets. He killed the two gangsters and held five other inmates hostage, threatening to shoot them, said Santosh Verma, the spokesman of UP prison at Lucknow.

The jail officials sought help from the police team to control the situation and Dixit was soon gunned down and the hostages were rescued.

Police said Anshul Dixit faced 15 criminal cases, including the murder of Lucknow University Student Union general secretary Vinod Tripathi in 2007, the HT report informed.
