Lankan President Rajapakse confident to return to power

Hambantota (Sri Lanka), Jan 8 (IBNS): Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said he was confident that he would be returned to power, media reports said.

Rajapakse cast his ballot in presidential elections on Thursday.

The president promised a peaceful post-election period and said his opponents would be protected.

“We will have a resounding victory. That is very clear. From tomorrow, we will start implementing our manifesto,” he said in his constituency in Hambantota.

Rajapakse faces stiff challenge from Maithripala Sirisena who defected from his government to stand as the main opposition candidate.

The campaign was marred by violence with top US diplomat John Kerry this week urging Rajapakse to ensure the election was peaceful and credible.
